Face Your Fears

Facing fears is a significant topic. Finding a landing spot to begin a conversation on this topic is complicated. Fear of death, health issues, world crises, financial troubles, or getting bitten by a snake are real, and there are various ways to accept or overcome them.

I am terrified of heights. I get that pit in my stomach when I am up too high or near the edge of a drop-off. I’d like to understand more why I have this fear, given that I love to fly, hike tall mountains, and climb a ladder to clean out the gutters at my house.

I also fear failure- admitting and accepting my failures or setbacks. I was once a competitive athlete. Age and a near-fatal brain injury have changed my physical abilities. I was a rising and thriving executive in the business world. Internal and external factors altered that trajectory.

How have I tackled my fears?

  1. Avoidance
  2. Crying
  3. Grin and bear it and plow through
  4. Tackling the issue with a trusted friend, coach, or colleague
  5. Reframing the desired outcome

We need to show up, go forward, and find our path. Is there someone you trust who can help you work through the noise and find clarity that is right for you?

I apply #1 to tall things like climbing a lighthouse. I use #2, #3, and #4 when hiking ridges on the AT. Professionally, I’ve used #4 to help me outline #5. Compass Consulting is the result of accepting and overcoming my fear of professional failures and finding my new path.

Fearlessness is contagious.
You don't have to attack it alone.
